"Even without doing activities in the street, we can still work online. As Stephen Hawking said, 'although I cannot move and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind I am free'. That's something we all need to hear at this time."

  • "In the middle of a world pandemic, no particular project in mind, a stressful daily life.

    17, Nov 2020

"In the middle of a world pandemic, no particular project in mind, a stressful daily life... The list goes on.

April 2020: I actually gave up on settling my life down in France. I suddenly felt the pressing need to get out of my comfort zone (which was not so comfortable to be honest). I wanted to know more about the world, I wanted to learn more about myself, about my reactions in an environment that I don't control.

After several appointments with a youth association in my hometown (near Lille, North of France), I figured out that the European Solidarity Corps project would totally suits my needs. This is how I started to apply to A LOT of 1 year long missions all around Europe. My state of mind was the following: ‘after my first positive reply, I’ll jump in a plane’. Obviously I had preferences... But guess what! Luckily, the first positive reply was actually my number one choice! Things went pretty fast after the official annoucement of the selected volunteers.

This is how, on the 11th of September, I was flying from Paris to Porto. At the airport, Carlos (Spanish volunteer who is also my flatmate) was waiting for Anne (another French volunteer) and me with signs that got our names and a french flag on it...! Very cliché but kind of lovely!

According the actual pandemic situation, I knew that things might be a bit different and/or weird in a certain way. But I was ready for that - it's part of the challenge. I had to deal with it anyway, so I tried to take the best out of everything. Anne and I got blood tested on the 12th. We received the results on the 14th and I was negative. Anne had previously had Covid-19 already, so she was indeed positive. Yiha!

Quarantine time! The 3 of us used that quarantine week to know each other. It was great and useful in a certain way. At the end of the week and after Anne's PCR test came out negative (yiha!), we were FREE!

It was a pleasure to meet the whole Sójovem staff in person (receiving association located in Ermesinde). I personnaly felt very welcomed. After some weeks, Anne and I were finally able to start our main mission, which is to help and support the team of a zoo (Zoo da Maia). It has been a bit more than two weeks now and everything is going really good. Some days are better than others for sure, but overall I really do enjoy my time here. The staff is trying their best to make us feel good and useful.

Well, I could keep sharing my first 2 ESC months for pages but that's not the point. I already feel that so many things happened. I skipped a lot of details that are making my experience even more interesting and fulfilling... But I'm trying to write an article, not a book."
